UGLY MV and Song Analysis

Note: This is not a review of how good or bad the song or MV was rather this is an analysis of what the message of the song is.

The MV delivered the message of the song through a simple yet symbolic means. If you haven’t read the English translation of the song it basically speaks about being insecure of one’s physical appearance. Without analysis or further thought you would think that the song sends out a message that one SHOULD be insecure about him or herself. In actuality the song has a deeper meaning and with its marriage with the MV – a better explanation can be told about it.

There are probably a lot more interpretations that can be written about the song and the MV, these are the ones I can come up with.

Message A: You are not alone and you are worth more than just that. Love yourself.

It is only part of human nature to judge people based on their appearance. That is why everyone strives to be an ideal shape or figure because we want to satisfy the eyes of others. UGLY sends out a message that you are not alone in facing your insecurities. Physical insecurity specifically exists indefinitely that even 2NE1 would sing about it!

The song also tells us that you are worth more than your looks. Fine. You may look especially unique from others but what does that actually mean? Should that make you isolate yourself and change your body image just to satisfy the needs of others? Definitely not. Acceptance is a key to resolving one’s insecurity. By accepting your own flaws you will radiate an aura that will make others look past your looks.

Message B: Hey buddy, don’t be too quick to judge.

The song is not only meant to capture the hearts of those who have lack of confidence in their appearance but also those who maim others because they seem physically “different” from the norm. It tells such people to STOP and to think about their actions. After all insecurity can only be caused by others – one would only think they are truly physically ugly if it has been engrained by ignorant people that they are “UGLY.” It is a sad reality to see that people ostracize others because they feel superiorly handsome or beautiful. Teddy and Lydia’s song definitely calls out to these people that they should back off. We should all treat other as equals and not judge others by their appearance.

Message C: C-O-N-F-I-D-E-N-C-E!

Other than the chorus most of the song has a soft and melodic tune to it. The strong and addicting chorus emphasis that even though you are “ugly”, you can make up for your looks by being confident. One should just accept oneself and be proud of what they have. Insatiability is an evil thing and being satisfied with what you have will bring you happiness. Rather than changing parts of your body one should change their self-image and confidence.

End.
